The 40%-50% statistic only works if I've spent substantial time with the individual, or if they throw in the occasional English word.
If I try and decipher a conversation in a restaurant, for example, I don't have the same success rate. I wish I were a quicker study when it comes to learning languages and retaining foreign words.
